Frequently Asked Questions

How should I prepare for a massage?

Stay well-hydrated in the hours prior to massage therapy.  Avoid a large meal within 2 hours of a session and avoid alcohol prior to massage.  A shower prior to massage therapy is much appreciated.  If you wish to have your feet massaged, please be sure they are clean!  Empty your bladder prior to a massage session.  If you are having an in-studio massage, arrive about 10 minutes early to allow time for discussion and relaxation prior to the session.

What should I wear during a massage session?

Clients should disrobe to their level of comfort.  Most clients disrobe completely (without the therapist present), and all clients are draped with a sheet or towel prior to and during treatment.  It is most effective to work on the low back, glutes, and thighs when the client is not wearing underwear, but if clients prefer to keep underwear in place, we can manage.  Bras should be removed prior to treatment.  Be assured that draping protocols will only expose the areas on which we are working directly.  Genitals and female breasts are never exposed during treatments.

Is draping required?

In the state of Florida, draping is required for all massage sessions to assure the comfort and safety of clients and therapists.  Generally draping is done with a sheet, but some clients prefer a towel drape.  Please address any concerns about draping with your therapist prior to your treatment.

What should I do after a massage session?

Many clients feel very relaxed after a massage and should use caution when driving in the first hours after a session.  Only light alcohol intake should be considered in the afternoon/evening after a session.  Hydrating well after massage will minimize soreness and aid in recovery.

When should I avoid massage therapy?

While massage is a very safe form of treatment, there are some contraindications to massage therapy.  People who have had recent surgery, have given birth within the past 2-4 weeks, or have had a recent blood clot should avoid massage therapy unless cleared by their physician or other health care provider.  Your therapist will review your intake form and discuss your medical history prior to your session.  Clients who are pregnant, on blood thinners, diabetic, or who have skin conditions should discuss their history with the therapist to determine the safest way to proceed.

Should massage be painful?

Swedish/relaxing massage is rarely painful.  Deep tissue work can cause discomfort to clients, but your therapist should be checking in regularly regarding pressure and level of discomfort.  If there is anything causing significant discomfort during a session, please speak up!  It is normal after a deep tissue session to have some muscle soreness for 1-2 days. Hydration, ice, and gentle stretching can mitigate that discomfort.
